Steel Mechanical Fasteners
Conveyor belts can also be made endless by using mechanical fasteners. A belt fastener consists
of a strip of eyes that are hydraulically pressed into both belt ends. A connection thread is then pushed through the eyes to secure the join. Belt fasteners are p
articularly convenient in situations where the conveyor belt needs to be changed regularly.
The Alligator® Lacing Fastening System is ideal for easy, economical installation of a low-profile belt splice. Available in continuous lengths, this system fits any belt width and provides uniform tension across the entire belt. The fasteners are available in stainless steel or galvanised steel, offering durability and resistance to various environmental conditions.
Belt Vulcanisation
A conveyor belt can be made endless through vulcanisation. Using a heat press or high-
frequency machine, both ends of the belt are vulcanised together. Different joint methods can be used, with the choice depending on the number of fabric plies, the belt's construction and running direction, and the load it will carry.
Vulcanised joints are known for their reliability and strength. They create a seamless bond that enhances the belt's performance and longevity. This reliable joining method minimises the risk of mechanical failure, reduces maintenance needs, and ensures smooth, uninterrupted operation, thereby extending the overall life of the conveyor belt.
Conveyor Tracking Guides
When a sideways force is applied to part of the conveyor belt or if there is dirt on the drums, the belt can come off track. To stop this, belts can have tracking guides that absorb these sideways forces. The added benefit of stopping belts from travelling with sideways forces creates positive belt alignment. By adding this feature to conveyor belts, belt life can be extended, minimising downtime and interruption.
Tracking guides can be made from PVC or TPU. The choice of material depends on the application and the belt material. Tracking guides come in V-shape and block shape. Many tracking guides can also be made with notches, allowing them to be used with smaller rollers.
In addition to different materials and shapes, tracking guides also vary in size, colour, and hardness.
Flights and Cleats
Flights and cleats are essential components of conveyor belts, designed to enhance the belt's efficiency and effectiveness in material handling. These features help to control the movement of materials on the belt, especially on inclines and declines. Cleats are vertical barriers on the belt that prevent materials from slipping, while flights are raised sections that help move materials smoothly and efficiently. Choosing the right size and type of flights and cleats depends on various factors, including the drum diameter, incline angle, material characteristics, and belt width.
Sidewalls for Conveyor Belts
Sidewalls help control the movement of products on conveyor belts, whether they are moving straight, uphill, or downhill. Their wavy design allows the sidewalls to be quite tall while still working with small pulleys, balancing the belt's capacity and the size of the pulleys. This design prevents products from spilling off the belt and is often used with cleats.
Sidewalls can be made with or without fabric reinforcements. Fabric-reinforced sidewalls are more tear-resistant, making them better for moving rough materials. In applications needing high hygiene standards, monolithic sidewalls are more flexible and resistant to contamination since they don't absorb liquids. Sidewalls come in various colours, thicknesses, and materials.
